- The History of the American Chestnut: For centuries, the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was a cornerstone of Eastern U.S. forests—one in four hardwood trees in some regions. It provided abundant nutritious nuts for wildlife and people, durable timber for economies, and shade that shaped ecosystems and communities. In the early 20th century, an introduced fungal blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) devastated billions of trees, reducing the species to functional extinction in the wild. While surviving root sprouts persist, pure American chestnuts remain highly susceptible to the blight. Today, hope comes from blight-resistant hybrids developed through decades of scientific effort.
